Beating the Odds - Kozol, June 2009

"Let us continue to find the Hidden Treasures in our Scholars."

As I rode the 7 train to Port Authority to catch my bus to Nueva Jersy, Jonathan Kozol's story of Lady Marmalade resonated in my soul and it later inspired me to create this site.

  1. I think it is a fabulous idea. I am relatively new to "blogging" but I immediately see how it can cultivate a intellectual forum. Kudos....

  2. Okay, as we begin to change topics, I was wondering if any of you heard about the city hospitals being instructed to do something, in my opinion, unethical? I was recently informed that we at Mosaic had two "confirmed" cases of the H1N1 virus. When I investigated the matter further, hospital papers (official documents) indicated that the individual had "Influenza A" not the H1N1 virus. Can you get ready for this?

Protocol by the Dept of Health dictates that the school nurse strictly monitor all members of the school community who come to her and only report to them when there are "clusters" of individuals who present similar symptoms such as: persistent cough, high fever of 100.2 and one other...I cannot remember. If she does not have at least 5 people in one day presenting these symptoms, she was instructed to just continuing logging the information and not create hysteria or panic in the building.

It is my opinion that NYC, DOH, UFT, DOE and CDC are all on different pages when it comes to handling this unfortunate outbreak. I feel that in the midst of trying to "control" the situation, they are placing individuals at risk. The system is a little flawed. Communication amongst agency heads is critical when we have such a problem to face.

    So what do you think?

  3. Wow-that is wild!
Meanwhile, here we are trying our hardest to give our scholars quality instruction. And with so many of our scholars absent, it does make our job harder.

  4. Okay, since many have not caught on, I am opting to change the topic once again...LOL.
I really feel that the Chapter Leader Elections is going well, and with the skills of the Chapter Election Cmte Chairperson, Reina, we can ascertain nothing but an honest turnout and election. I am so excited to be one of the nominees. I just wish that I can continue to serve the Mosaic Chapter as we move towards becoming a highly recognized institution of learning.

We all know that the best schools are the ones where the entire staff (especially UFT and CSA/DOE) are in sync with each other. I am so proud to say we have gone through an entire year without filing a grievance, and there was only 2 or 3 letters written to file. Many of the chapter leaders in the district cannot attest to that.

Anyway, I encourage all of you to be involved in the Elections for Chapter Leader, Delegate and Paraprofessional Representative. I would also encourage you to get involved with union activities such as "committeeships" (if there is a word?).

Happy journey to becoming a memorable educator.
